Obesity – The Silent Epidemic

What is happening to our bodies and how we can help them heal

Every second adult European is overweight today. One in four is obese. This is no longer an exception — it is a norm that kills quietly and slowly. But there is good news: the body knows how to heal itself. We just have to let it.

39%
of EU adults are overweight
13%
of the world population is obese
3×
higher risk of type 2 diabetes

01 — CAUSES

We are surrounded by food that destroys us

Never in human history have we had access to so many calories with so little real nutritional value. Supermarket shelves are flooded with ultra-processed products full of refined sugars, trans fats and additives that simply "switch off" the brain's natural satiety signal.

Food is designed to be impossible to stop eating. The industry has spent decades investing billions so that flavours are powerful enough to bypass our every instinct. They activate the same pathways in the brain as addictive substances. That is not a metaphor — it is neurobiology. But food is not the only culprit:

  • Chronic stress raises cortisol — the hormone that drives the body to store fat specifically around the abdomen
  • Too little sleep disrupts leptin and ghrelin (the hormones that regulate hunger and satiety), so we eat even when we are not hungry
  • A sedentary lifestyle: eight hours at a desk, an hour in the car, an evening on the sofa
  • Constant snacking, which never gives the body a break from digestion and insulin
  • The disappearance of home cooking and growing dependence on fast food and ready meals

"We are not weak-willed. We live in an environment that has been systematically designed to make us overweight. This is a problem with the system, not with us."

02 — METABOLIC FAILURE

Insulin resistance: the root of everything

Imagine shouting at someone every day. At first they respond immediately. After a few weeks they start ignoring you. After a year, nothing. That is exactly what happens between insulin and our cells.

When we eat too much sugar and refined carbohydrates for years, the pancreas constantly pumps out insulin. The cells eventually simply "go deaf" and become resistant to insulin. The body stores more and more fat, especially the dangerous visceral fat that accumulates around the internal organs.

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Fatty liver (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis)
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in women
  • Elevated triglycerides and poor lipid profile
  • Inflammatory processes throughout the body
  • Cognitive decline (brain insulin resistance)

03 — CONSEQUENCES

The domino effect: one disease breeds another

Obesity is not just an aesthetic problem. Excess fatty tissue is not passive — it actively secretes inflammatory molecules, disrupts hormones and, slowly but surely, burdens every system in the body.

  • High blood pressure (hypertension): the heart must pump harder through a larger body, and fatty tissue narrows the blood vessels
  • Cardiovascular diseases: atherosclerosis, heart attack and stroke
  • Blood fats: high triglycerides, low HDL ("good") cholesterol
  • Sleep apnoea: fat around the throat blocks the airway
  • Joint diseases: overloading of the knee and hip joints
  • Cancer: obesity is the second leading cause of cancer, just behind smoking
  • Depression and anxiety: inflammation directly affects the brain

High blood pressure and blood fats are not independent diseases. They are symptoms of the same underlying problem. Treating them with pills without addressing the cause is like silencing an alarm instead of putting out the fire.

04 — HOPE

The body has an extraordinary power of self-healing

Almost all metabolic disorders caused by obesity are reversible. The body is not a broken machine without spare parts. It is a living, dynamic organism that constantly works to restore balance.

Once we start losing excess body fat, especially the visceral fat around the internal organs, the body begins doing what it knows how to do: regenerating. And it happens faster than most people think:

  1. Insulin sensitivity improves within weeks. Cells start "listening" to insulin again.

  2. Blood pressure drops without medication, sometimes by as much as 10–20 mmHg.

  3. Triglycerides and bad cholesterol normalise.

  4. Inflammatory markers in the blood (CRP) fall. The body "calms down".

  5. Energy increases, sleep improves, mood stabilises.

05 — TOOL

Intermittent fasting: an ancient trick, modern science

Intermittent fasting (IF) is not some new American diet fad. It is returning the body to its natural biological rhythm. The most common and easiest model: eat within an 8-hour window, fast for 16 hours (e.g. from noon to 8 pm). And here is what happens while you "do nothing":

  • Insulin drops to a minimum and the body switches to burning fat
  • Autophagy is activated — the cellular "clean-up" of damaged proteins and organelles
  • Growth hormone rises, protecting muscles and burning fat
  • The brain switches to ketones, bringing mental clarity and better concentration
  • The digestive system gets a rest and inflammation in the gut decreases

Fasting is not starvation. Fasting is giving the body enough time to finish the work it started — repair, cleansing and regeneration.

06 — KEY ORGAN

The liver: a factory that can regenerate

Do you know which is the only organ in the human body that can regenerate completely? The liver. You can surgically remove two thirds of a liver and it will grow back. That extraordinary regenerative capacity makes the liver the key to everything discussed in this article.

When the liver becomes fatty, it starts "refusing to accept" glucose from the blood. Fatty liver is not just a liver problem — it is the trigger of a chain reaction that drives diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. But when we start losing visceral fat, the liver is the first to empty:

  • The liver becomes sensitive to insulin and blood sugar normalises
  • The liver breaks down cholesterol better and the lipid profile improves
  • The liver detoxifies better — less inflammation and more energy
  • Hormones normalise, sleep improves and mood becomes more stable

07 — REGENERATION

Blood pressure and blood fats: the body can regulate them itself

Many people take blood pressure pills and statins for years and never get off them. Not because it is inevitable, but because the root cause is never addressed.

The evidence is clear: losing just 5–10% of body weight lowers systolic blood pressure by 3–8 mmHg, without a single pill. Triglycerides respond even faster — within a few weeks of reducing sugar and processed food intake, blood work starts to look different.

The body does not ask for miracles or expensive supplements. It asks for just one thing: to be given a break. To be given real food. To be moved. And it will do the rest, because that is what it was made for.

The body knows its way back.

It does not need a magic pill or an expensive operation. It needs space, a rest from constant digestion and insulin spikes. It needs real food — not caloric silence, but food that truly nourishes. And it needs patience, because years of damage are not repaired in a week — but they are repaired. Your body is not your enemy. It is your most faithful ally, waiting only for you to help it do what it was made to do.
